EASTERN CONFERENCE FINALS
GAME ONE NOTES

groupPREGAME AUDIO: Todd Richards

PENS IN THE PLAYOFFS:  This is the sixth consecutive season the Penguins have made an appearance in the Calder Cup Playoffs, and the seventh time in the nine year history of the team.

The Penguins have an all-time playoff record of 50-44 in postseason competition, and have outscored their opponents 277-266.

IN GAME ONE:  The Penguins have an all-time record of 7-11 in Game One of a playoff series, and a 4-5 mark on home ice.  The team’s Game One win in the 2008 East Division Semifinals vs. Hershey was the first victory in the opening game of a playoff round since the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals vs. Hartford.  The Pens had dropped seven consecutive Game Ones before the Hershey win.

POWER UP:  The Penguins have recorded at least one power play goal in six of their past eight games, are second in the AHL with a 21% success rate (13 for 62).  Only the Chicago Wolves (22.1, 17 for 77) have a better power play mark.

The Penguins are scoring at a 25% clip (9 for 36) on home ice, tied for the top mark in the league thus far.

MISC. NOTES:

  • The Penguins lead the AHL with 43 goals scored, and a 4.3 goals per game average.  The only other teams with a three goals per game average or better are the Chicago Wolves (39 goals, 13 games, 3.0) and the ousted Providence Bruins (33 goals, 10 games, 3.3)
  • Tim Brent set a new team record for most points in a playoff series with 11 (5+6) in the East Division Semifinals vs. Hershey.
  • Brent currently is tied for the AHL lead in points (17) and leads the league goals (9).
  • Brent has recorded at least one point in nine of the Penguins first 10 playoff games this season.  The only game where he was held off the scoresheet was the Pens’ 3-2 Game Three win against Philadelphia.
  • Brent also leads all players with six power play goals.
  • Chris Minard is second overall with eight goals through 10 games.  Two of those have been overtime winners (Game One vs. Hershey, Game Two vs. Philadelphia).  Alexandre Mathieu is the only other player in the history of the team to record two overtime postseason goals.
  • Minard has three game-winning goals overall this postseason.  The Penguins record for overtime goals in a career is four, set by Toby Petersen.
  • Alex Goligoski leads all rookies and defensemen, and ranks tied for third overall, in playoff scoring with 14 points (3+11).  His 11 assists are third in the league.
  • Goligoski had an eight-game scoring streak (3+11=14) - the longest in the league this postseason, and the longest in Penguins playoff history – snapped in Game Five against Philadelphia.
  • Ben Lovejoy is first overall with a plus-12 rating through 10 games, while Kurtis McLean is second with a plus-11 mark.
  • McLean, Minard and Ryan Stone are all tied for eighth in the league with 12 points.
  • John Curry is tied for first overall with eight wins.

WORKING OVERTIME:  The Penguins have played 94 postseason games during the past nine years, with 28 of those going to overtime (29.8% of all games).
